A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, Oldfield built his career on the ability to personally play dozens of different instruments, electric and acoustic guitars, bass, mandolin, glockenspiel, to name just a few, overdubbing each track with almost obsessive precision, at a time when multitrack recording technology was still in its infancy.
