The Song Remains the Same is the first official live album ever recorded by Led Zeppelin.

The song remains the sameReleased in 1976, it is the soundtrack to the concert film of the same name which was recorded at Madison Square Garden in New York in July 1973 during two dates.

The two concerts from which The song remains the same was taken were performed by Led Zeppelin during the tour to promote the album Houses of the Holy.

The vinyl was released by Swan Song Records, catalog no. SSK 89402, in October 1976 in double LP format.

The track list includes some of Zeppelin’s greatest hits which during live performance are widely dilated in time, 99 minutes long for only 9 tracks, and enriched by numerous virtuosities by all members of the group.

Stairway to heaven is played by Jimmy Page with his famous double neck guitar, one with six and one with twelve strings, John Bonham during the execution of Moby Dick produces an endless drum solo, John Paul Jones abandons the bass to perform, also, in a keyboard solo in No quarter.

Nothing strange anyway because it was a standard of the band to give its audience extremely engaging and creative live performances and which manages to produce an exceptional live performance, even if in some moments a bit verbose, but lived up to expectations.

The disc was a great success with the public and went on to earn several gold records. It was also certified platinum in the UK and USA.

Due to the particularly long duration of some of the songs included in The song remains the same The song remains the samemany of the songs featured in the live shows could not be included on the album at the time.

Probably also for this reason, a reissue was released in 2007 which added six new songs to the original lineup, bringing the total length of the album to 130 minutes.

This new remastered version, had a notable commercial success, so much so that it convinced the producer label to publish a further reissue consisting of four vinyls enclosed in a box.
This reissue, of course, was also certified gold and platinum.

Of this quadruple version, a limited edition was also released with white vinyl, practically unobtainable.
