For those who don’t know yet Discogs is a website that maintains a database of records, international and of all musical genres, and currently represents one of the main tools used by record collectors to be able to correctly evaluate the copies in their possession.
In addition Discogs is also a huge and highly specialized market place where records of all kinds are sold every day. It is therefore logical that through this instrument sales of rare pieces are also made at extremely high costs.
For those who follow records market, it may therefore be interesting to see which were the most expensive records sold on Discogs in 2022.
The Beatles, with almost their entire catalog, are always present at the within the monthly lists that summarize the most expensive sales. It makes sense that John Lennon & Co. would be in the 2022 year-end recap. Their debut album Please, Please Me made the list a whopping four times. Three of the albums sold are the coveted “Dick James Credits” version, with one copy selling for so much money it cracked the top five for the entire year. Even the rare pressings of Introducing…The Beatles and The Beatles & Frank Ifield On Stage fetched big enough sums to secure a place in the top 50 most expensive records of 2022.
With all due respect to all those who think that classical music does not “market” what we understand from the list of the most expensive records sold on Discogs in 2022 is that classical collectors can be some of the most ardent fans. In fact, it was a boxed set of Mozart compositions that was the most expensive item purchased on Discogs in 2022. A Copy of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and a triple LP of George Enesco’s version of the Bach Sonatas also placed in the top 15.
The abundance of soul 45s on the list is also hardly surprising as they regularly sell for pretty high prices on Discogs. Papa Bear And The Cubs, Rita & The Tiaras and Marvin Preyer are among many soul records that have attracted the attention of serious collectors. Worth mentioning Rita & The Tiaras because there are two versions of their Gone With The Wind Is My Love / Wild Times 7 inch on the list.
Let’s start by looking at the three most expensive discs sold on Discogs in 2022
In first place we find Mozart in Paris, a 7 LP box set sold for the “modest cost” of $19277.
Second place goes to Monster Movie by The can. A copy of this psychedelic rock record was purchased for $13,360.
On the lowest step of the podium there is a copy of Super-sonic jazz by The sun Ra orchestra. The 1957 vinyl version sold for $10,000
Just missing the $10,000 Beatles quote that with a copy of Please, please me only reach $9547.
If, on the other hand, you are a Led Zeppelin fan, you should know that the rare Classic Records Led Zeppelin box set consisting of 48 single-sided 12″ discs contained in a special Classic Records case was purchased for €9,000.
For the same amount, a 1967 promo copy of Gone With The Wind Is My Love / Wild Times by Rita and the Tiaras was sold, a highly sought-after soul piece by collectors. Mötley Crüe follows with $8,700 with the album Too fast for love
