Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965–1968
Jack Holzman, fondatore della Elektra, nel 1972 ebbe un’idea geniale che dimostrò, fra l’altro, quanto egli avesse ben presente l’intera produzione musicale rock degli ultimi anni. Holzman decise infatti di raccogliere in un disco il meglio della produzione garage rock e psichedelica prodotta tra il 1965 e il 1968. Chiamò quindi Lenny Kaye, futoro chitarrista di fiducia di Patti Smith, che, entusiasta del progetto, scelse i brani e produsse il disco.
Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, fu quindi pubblicato nel 1972, ovviamente dall’etichetta Elektra (catalogo 7E-2006 ), su doppio vinile e fin da subito è diventato un punto di riferimento imprescindibile per tutti gli appassionati del rock americano degli anni sessanta.
Nel 1976 è stato ristampato per la prima volta ma con una diversa copertina. In questo caso la pubblicazione fu curata dall’etichetta Sire records con numero di catalogo SASH 3716-2
Infine il disco è stato rimasterizzato e ristampato un’ultima volta nel 1998 incrementando la playlist originale di Holzman. La Rhino Records infatti ha decise di pubblicare un cofanetto composto da 4 dischi di cui solo il primo conteneva le tracce del disco originale, mentre negli altri 3 vengono riprodotti brani musicali sempre riferiti al periodo 1965-1968 ma tralasciati dalla raccolta originale del 1972.
Fra i gruppi inclusi nella raccolta del ’72 spiccano i 13Th floor elevator, The electric Prunes, The Standells.
Jon Savage, celebre giornalista musicale britannico, nel suo England dreaming, storia del punk rock britannico dice chiaramente come Nuggets abbia avuto una grande influenza su i maggiori gruppi punk e lo include nella sua discografia essenziale punk rock insieme a Raw Power di Iggy and the Stooges .
